Storyline 360 Tutorial

Getting Started with Motion Path Animations and Triggers in Storyline 360

Replicating complex, Flash-style animations used to require extensive custom scripting. With Articulate Storyline 360, motion path animations and object-based triggers allow instructional designers to build dynamic, responsive interactive events directly within the slide editor. By pairing non-linear motion paths with intersection triggers, you can control object orientations, slide entry events, and layered interactions without writing complex code.

Orienting Objects to Motion Paths

When an object moves along a curved or non-linear motion path, it often looks unnatural if its orientation remains fixed. Storyline 360 allows objects to automatically turn and face the direction of movement.

  1. 01

Select the Target Object & Apply a Motion Path

Select the target object and apply a motion path animation via the Animations tab on the ribbon.

  2. 02

    Open Path Options

Click Path Options in the Animations control panel.

  3. 03

    Select Orient Shape to Path

    Select Orient Shape to Path.

The object will automatically adjust its rotation angle relative to the curvature of the motion path as it animates.

Object Interaction Triggers in Storyline 360

Storyline 360 includes triggers based on spatial position and object collisions along motion paths:

Storyline 360 Trigger Wizard set to 'Show layer' when 'Object intersects', with two car hit areas checked

Trigger Actions When Objects Intersect

Fires an event (such as revealing a slide layer, playing audio, or changing a variable) the exact moment two bounding boxes overlap on screen.

Storyline 360 Trigger Wizard set to 'Show layer' when 'Object intersection ends'

Trigger Actions When Objects No Longer Intersect

Executes an action when two overlapping objects separate (e.g., when a child shape moves outside a designated boundary area).

Storyline 360 Trigger Wizard set to 'Change state of' when 'Object enters slide'

Trigger Actions When Objects Enter the Slide

Triggers visual or logic events the moment an animated object crosses into the visible artboard area.

Storyline 360 Trigger Wizard set to 'Change state of' when 'Object leaves slide'

Trigger Actions When Objects Leave the Slide

Executes actions (such as resetting states or advancing timelines) when an object completes its motion path off-screen.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Do object intersection triggers work with user-dragged objects?

Yes. Object intersection triggers function both with automated motion path animations and when learners manually drag objects across the screen.

Can I fine-tune collision accuracy for irregularly shaped assets?

Storyline calculates intersections based on the bounding box of the selected assets. Adjusting crop boundaries or grouping transparent shapes helps refine collision areas.

How do motion path animations perform on mobile devices?

Motion paths and triggers render using HTML5 vector controls, ensuring consistent playback across desktop browsers and mobile devices.
