Overemphasis on visuals and technology, under-designing for learning outcomes: Training may look good, but if it does not drive behaviour change or performance, it under-delivers. Mitigation: insist on clear learning objectives and measurement of impact.
Lack of alignment with business goals: Online training that’s disconnected from real business challenges or job roles will fail to engage. Mitigation: link training to KPIs, job tasks, performance metrics.
Poor learner experience: If modules are too long, not mobile-friendly, or are mere “slide dumps”, learners disengage. Mitigation: adopt micro-learning, mobile-friendly design, interactive elements.
Underestimating content update/maintenance needs: Training content may become obsolete (policy changes, regulation updates). Mitigation: budget for updates and choose a partner offering maintenance.
Mis-alignment between developer and internal SMEs or stakeholders: Communication breakdown may lead to scope creep, mismatched expectations or delayed delivery. Mitigation: adopt a collaborative approach, establish milestones, prototypes, clear roles.
Inadequate measurement of training effectiveness: Without tracking results, you cannot demonstrate ROI or continuous improvement. Mitigation: define metrics up front, use analytics, run post-training assessments and behaviour follow-ups.
Technology integration issues: If the online training doesn’t integrate with your LMS or has compatibility problems, rollout and tracking suffer. Mitigation: check standards (SCORM/xAPI), test thoroughly, define integration requirements upfront.
